What Are Aluminium Bifold Doors?

Aluminium bifold doors are multi-panel glazing systems. Multiple door panels fold against each other and stack to one side of the opening. This creates a wide, unobstructed gap between indoor and outdoor spaces — the full width of the opening can be cleared.

A standard 4-metre bifold door system might use 4 panels. Each panel is approximately 1 metre wide. When closed, the four panels span the full opening. When open, all four panels fold and stack against the wall on one side, clearing the entire 4-metre opening. No frame remains in the way.

This is the fundamental advantage bifold doors have over sliding doors: a completely clear opening. A sliding door always leaves at least one panel visible in the aperture.

How Bifold Doors Work Mechanically

Each panel is connected to the next by a hinge. The panels are carried on a bottom track — rollers on the base of each panel travel along a stainless steel rail recessed into or sitting on top of the threshold.

The top track guides the panels but carries minimal load. The weight sits on the bottom rollers. This is called bottom rolling and is the standard configuration for aluminium bifold doors. It is different from top hung systems, where the weight is carried from above.

When you open a bifold door, the panels fold concertina-style and travel along the track to stack at the side. The traffic door — if the configuration includes one — opens independently without folding the remaining panels.

Are Aluminium Bifold Doors Still a Good Choice in 2025?

Yes — and the concern that bifold doors are outdated is worth addressing directly.

Bifold doors became widely popular in UK homes from the early 2010s. Some buyers worry they have passed their peak and will date a property. They haven’t. They remain the most specified wide-span glazing system for UK rear extensions and kitchen renovations. The volume of bifold door installations across the UK continues to grow year on year.

The aesthetic has evolved. Early bifold doors were often characterised by bulky frames and basic colour options. Modern aluminium bifold systems offer slim 87mm sightlines, dual colour finishes, and precision engineering that looks contemporary rather than dated.

Where sliding doors have grown in popularity, they’ve grown alongside bifold doors rather than replacing them. The two systems suit different situations. Bifold doors give a completely clear opening — sliding doors don’t. For buyers who want to fully open a space, bifold remains the right choice.

How Aluminium Bifold Doors Differ From Other Door Types

Bifold doors fold and stack. Sliding doors glide on a track but leave one panel permanently in the aperture. French doors swing open on hinges — wide openings require multiple French door pairs and a fixed frame in the centre. Patio doors are typically two panels, one fixed and one sliding, suitable for narrower openings.

For openings wider than approximately 1.8 metres where you want the full width available, bifold doors are the practical choice.

Where Bifold Doors Are Most Commonly Installed

Rear of property: kitchen extensions and garden rooms opening to patios and gardens. This is the most common residential installation.

Side returns: narrower openings on the side of a property connecting utility areas or dining rooms to outdoor spaces.

Commercial spaces: restaurant terraces, hospitality venues, and office partitions where flexible space division is needed.

Aluminium Bifold Door Configurations Explained

Configuration refers to how many panels the bifold system uses and how they stack when open. This decision affects how the doors look, how they operate, and how much stacking space is needed.

2-Panel Bifold Doors

Two panels fold against each other and stack to one side. The smallest bifold configuration. Suitable for openings from approximately 1.2 metres to 1.8 metres wide. Both panels move — there is no fixed panel in a 2-panel bifold.

Best for: narrow openings where a single door would be too tall, or where a clear full-width opening is needed in a compact space.

3-Panel Bifold Doors

Three panels. One panel acts as a traffic door — it opens independently on its own hinges without moving the other two. The remaining two fold and stack with the traffic door when the full opening is required.

Suitable for openings from approximately 1.8 metres to 2.7 metres. The traffic door is typically positioned at the most convenient access point — often the end nearest the garden path or seating area.

Best for: everyday access use without opening the full system each time. A practical family home choice.

4-Panel Bifold Doors

Four panels in two pairs. The system can stack all four panels to one side (master stacking) or split into two pairs that fold to opposite ends (split stacking). Split stacking gives a symmetrical appearance and requires stacking space on both sides of the opening.

Suitable for openings from approximately 2.4 metres to 3.6 metres.

Best for: standard rear extension openings where maximum light and a balanced visual appearance are priorities.

5-Panel and 6-Panel Bifold Doors

Five and six panel systems suit wider openings — 3.5 metres to 5 metres or more. Six panel systems offer the most dramatic visual impact when fully open but require significant stacking space.

A 6-panel system stacking to one side needs approximately 1.5 metres of clear wall space for the stacked panels. Confirm stacking space is available before specifying a 6-panel system.

Five panels allow a traffic door configuration with an asymmetric split — for example, one panel opening independently and four panels stacking to the opposite side.

What Is a Traffic Door?

A traffic door is a single panel in a bifold system that opens independently for everyday use. It works exactly like a standard hinged door — push it open and walk through. The remaining panels stay folded and stacked.

Without a traffic door, opening the bifold system requires folding and stacking all panels every time you want access. For a busy household using the door multiple times daily, a traffic door is a practical necessity.

Traffic doors are possible in any odd-numbered configuration: 3-panel, 5-panel, or 7-panel. In even-numbered systems (2, 4, 6 panels), there is no traffic door — all panels move together.

Opening Direction — Inward vs Outward

Bifold doors can be configured to fold inward (into the room) or outward (onto the patio or garden). Both are structurally sound. The right choice depends on your space.

Outward opening requires clear exterior space for the panels to fold into. On a small patio or balcony, outward folding panels can obstruct the outdoor area. Outward opening does have one advantage: when open, the panels fold out of the room, keeping the interior floor space completely clear.

Inward opening requires clear interior space behind where the panels will stack. In a busy kitchen or living room, inward stacking panels can obstruct movement around the opening. But if exterior space is limited, inward opening may be the only practical option.

Most UK residential installations use outward opening because patios and garden areas typically have more clear space than interior rooms near the threshold.

Stacking Direction

Panels can stack to the left, to the right, or split and fold to both ends. The stacking direction is chosen at order stage and built into the system — it cannot be changed after manufacture.

Consider where the wall space is. Stacking panels need approximately 300mm per panel of clear, unobstructed wall alongside the opening. A 4-panel system needs approximately 1.2 metres of wall space for the stacked panels.

If wall space is available on both sides, split stacking gives a symmetrical appearance and distributes the stacked panels evenly. If wall space is only on one side, master stacking sends all panels to that side.

Are Bifold Doors Top Hung or Bottom Rolling?

Most aluminium bifold doors — including all three systems in our range — are bottom rolling. The panels travel on rollers that sit in a bottom track. The weight of the doors is carried on these rollers.

Top hung systems carry the panels from a head track above. They are less common for heavy aluminium systems because the structural requirement at the head of the opening is more demanding. Bottom rolling systems are more suitable for aluminium bifold doors with large glazed panels and heavier sash weights.

The practical difference: bottom rolling systems require a threshold track at floor level. Top hung systems can achieve a cleaner threshold but are mechanically more complex for heavy aluminium panels.

Threshold Types for Aluminium Bifold Doors

The threshold is the section at the bottom of the door opening — the point where the door seals against the floor level. It is one of the most important specification decisions for bifold doors and the one most commonly overlooked until it’s too late to change.

Rebated Threshold

The most common threshold type. The outer sill steps down below the interior floor level, creating a small step over the threshold. The rebate holds water back and creates an effective weatherseal.

Typical step height: 15–25mm. This step is small enough that most people don’t notice it in daily use but it is a physical step and does not comply with Part M accessibility requirements.

Best for: typical residential installations where weathering performance is the priority and accessibility is not a requirement.

Low-Rise Threshold

A shallow version of the rebated threshold. Step height is reduced to approximately 8–15mm. Better for properties where minimising the step height matters — elderly residents, properties being adapted for limited mobility, or simply where a seamless feel between inside and outside is desired.

Weathering performance is slightly lower than a rebated threshold due to the reduced rebate depth. In very exposed or weather-prone locations, a low-rise threshold may allow more draught and water ingress than a rebated option.

Level Threshold — Part M Accessibility

A level threshold creates no step between the interior floor and the exterior ground. When the bifold system is open, there is a completely uninterrupted flat transition.

This threshold type complies with Part M of the Building Regulations — the accessibility standard that requires level access at entrances in new-build properties.

For a level threshold to perform well on weather resistance, the floor levels inside and outside must be precisely managed. The exterior ground level typically needs to be slightly lower than the interior to drain water away from the building. A drainage channel or carefully graded paving is usually required.

Best for: new-build properties subject to Part M requirements, properties where wheelchair or pushchair access is needed, or where seamless indoor-outdoor transition is the design priority.

Weathered Threshold

A deeper, more robust rebated threshold designed for very exposed locations. Taller rebate depth creates more resistance to driven rain and wind pressure.

Best for: coastal properties, hillside locations, south-west facing elevations exposed to prevailing weather, or any installation where weather penetration is a known risk.

How to Choose the Right Threshold

Confirm the floor level difference between inside and outside before choosing. If interior and exterior are at the same level, a level threshold is feasible. If the interior is significantly higher than the exterior (common in older UK properties), a level threshold requires significant groundworks to achieve.

For most standard UK residential extensions, a rebated threshold with appropriate external drainage is the practical and weatherproof choice. For new-build properties, confirm Part M requirements with your architect or building control.

Sightlines and Frame Profiles

What Are Sightlines?

Sightlines are the visible width of the aluminium frame when the bifold door is closed. When you look at a closed bifold door from inside or outside, the sightlines are the aluminium lines running vertically between the glass panels.

A narrow sightline means more glass and less aluminium visible. Wide sightlines mean less glass area and a heavier visual impression.

Sightlines are measured in millimetres. A meeting sightline of 100mm means 100mm of aluminium is visible where two panels meet. A slimline system might achieve 87mm at the same point.

Standard Sightlines vs Slimline Frames

Standard aluminium bifold systems typically achieve meeting sightlines of 100–130mm. These are structurally robust and suit most residential and commercial applications.

Slimline systems achieve meeting sightlines of 87–100mm. The F80 IconiK in our range achieves 87mm visible sightlines using the slim sash option — this is among the narrowest available in aluminium bifold systems.

The difference in glass area across a 4-metre system between standard and slimline profiles is meaningful. Slimline frames let in noticeably more light and give a cleaner, more minimal appearance.

How Sightline Width Affects Natural Light

Across a 4-panel bifold system approximately 4 metres wide, the difference between 130mm and 87mm sightlines is approximately 3 panels × 43mm reduction = 129mm less aluminium. That converts to an additional glass strip roughly 129mm wide across the full opening height — a meaningful gain in natural light.

Slimline vs Standard — Which Is Right for Your Project?

Standard frames are appropriate for most residential projects, commercial applications, and any installation where robustness and value matter.

Slimline frames are the right choice when visual impact is the primary consideration — particularly in contemporary interiors where minimising the frame presence is architecturally important.

Cost: slimline systems typically cost 5–10% more than standard configurations in the same specification.

Thermal Performance of Aluminium Bifold Doors

U-Values for Our Three Systems

U-value measures how much heat passes through the door per second, per square metre, for each degree of temperature difference. Lower is better. UK Building Regulations under Part L currently require replacement door systems to achieve a maximum whole-door U-value of 1.4 W/m²K.

Our three systems achieve:

The BSF70 at 1.6 W/m²K does not meet the current 1.4 W/m²K replacement door requirement on its own — confirm glazing specification with us when ordering to ensure compliance. The F80 and F82 systems comfortably meet the requirement with standard double glazing.

Thermal Break in Bifold Doors

All three systems use polyamide thermal break technology. The polyamide barrier sits inside the frame profile and prevents heat from conducting directly through the aluminium from inside to outside.

Without a thermal break, aluminium frames would feel cold to the touch in winter and lose heat rapidly. The polyamide break is what makes modern aluminium bifold doors energy efficient. Any system described as “thermally broken” includes this barrier.

Part L Compliance

Part L of the Building Regulations sets maximum U-values for replacement doors and windows. For whole door units (frame plus glazing), the current maximum is 1.4 W/m²K.

Our FENSA-registered installation service self-certifies compliance with Part L as standard. You can verify our registration on the FENSA website. You receive a certificate confirming compliance which is required when selling the property.

For new-build extensions requiring building regulations approval, the specific energy performance requirement will depend on the overall building energy calculation — your builder or architect advises on this.

Double Glazing vs Triple Glazing for Bifold Doors

Double glazing achieves glass unit U-values of approximately 1.0 W/m²K. It is standard across all our bifold door systems and is appropriate for most UK residential projects.

Triple glazing improves the glass unit U-value to approximately 0.5–0.6 W/m²K. The whole-door U-value improves but not proportionally because the frame also contributes to heat loss.

Triple glazing adds approximately 15–25% to the cost of the system. It also adds weight to each panel — relevant for very large panel configurations.

For most UK homes, double glazing with a thermally broken aluminium frame achieves comfortable performance. Triple glazing is most worthwhile for north-facing elevations, very exposed locations, or Passivhaus-level performance targets.

Air Tightness and Water Tightness Ratings

Beyond U-value, air tightness and water tightness ratings describe how well the sealed door system resists air infiltration and water penetration under pressure.

Air tightness is classified from Class 1 (lowest, 150Pa) to Class 4 (highest, 600Pa). Water tightness from Class 1A to Class 9A.

BSF70: Class 4 air tightness (600Pa), Class 9A water tightness (600Pa) — the highest available ratings.

F80 IconiK: Class 2 air tightness (300Pa), Class 5A water tightness (200Pa).

F82 Luminia: Class 4 air tightness (600Pa), Class 9A water tightness (600Pa).

For exposed locations, Class 4 air tightness and Class 9A water tightness are the benchmarks to specify. The BSF70 and F82 Luminia both achieve this.

Security Features of Aluminium Bifold Doors

Multi-Point Locking Systems

All quality aluminium bifold doors use multi-point locking. When you operate the handle or key on the traffic door or the lead panel, multiple locking points engage simultaneously at different heights up the door.

This matters because a door secured at only one point can be forced open at the unsecured ends. Multiple locking points distributed up the full height of the panel require simultaneous force at all points — significantly more difficult to achieve without a sustained, noisy effort.

Confirm the number of locking points and the locking standard when comparing systems.

Anti-Lift Protection

Anti-lift protection prevents panels from being lifted off their bottom track and removed from the outside. It is a feature of quality systems and should be confirmed with any supplier.

Shoot Bolt Mechanisms

Shoot bolts are additional locking pins that engage into the head track or threshold when the door is locked. They provide a secondary retention point at the top and bottom of panels, supplementing the main multi-point lock.

PAS 24 Certification

PAS 24 is the UK enhanced security standard for door sets, currently at version PAS 24:2022 (updated September 2024). Doors tested and certified to PAS 24 have passed controlled attack scenarios including physical attacks on the frame, locks, hinges, and glazing.

PAS 24 is required under Approved Document Q for accessible doors in new-build properties, extensions to existing homes requiring Building Regulations approval, and buildings converted to residential use.

In our range, the F82 Luminia system is fully PAS 24 and Secured by Design accredited. If security certification is a requirement for your project — particularly for new-build or insurance purposes — specify the F82 Luminia and request the test certificate from us in writing.

Glazing Security Options

Standard glazing is 4mm toughened glass in a double-glazed unit. Toughened glass is significantly harder to break than standard float glass and shatters into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards if broken.

Laminated glass adds a bonded interlayer between the panes. If broken, the interlayer holds the fragments in place. Laminated glass is significantly more resistant to sustained attack than toughened glass alone. Specify laminated glass if security is a primary concern.

Aluminium Bifold Door Sizes

Minimum Opening Width

The practical minimum width for a bifold door system is approximately 1.2 metres. Below this width, bifold panels become very narrow — too narrow to fold efficiently and visually awkward.

For openings below 1.5 metres, a French door pair is usually a more practical choice than bifold.

Maximum Span — How Wide Can Bifold Doors Be?

There is no hard maximum span for aluminium bifold door systems. Practically, systems up to 8–9 metres wide are achievable across multiple panels.

The limiting factors at very wide spans are: structural lintel size (very wide openings need engineered steel beams), stacking space for the folded panels, and individual panel width (each panel should generally not exceed 1.2 metres for smooth operation).

Common Bifold Door Opening Widths

These are the widths most commonly specified in UK homes:

3 metres: typically 3 panels. Most popular width for single-storey rear extensions.

4 metres: typically 4 panels. Common for wider extensions and garden rooms.

5 metres: typically 5 or 6 panels. Requires engineering assessment for lintel.

6 metres and over: 6, 7, or 8 panels. Requires steel structural beam. Requires survey to confirm feasibility.

When specifying, always measure the clear opening width — not the brick-to-brick dimension but the clear reveal between the finished structural reveals.

Maximum Panel Height by System

Maximum sash heights across our range:

For openings taller than 2,400mm, the F82 Luminia is the appropriate system. Heights above approximately 2,200mm add weight to each panel — confirm the sash weight is within the roller capacity for the system specified.

Sash weight increases with panel height and glazing specification. Large panels with triple glazing in a tall configuration approach the sash weight limits. Your survey will confirm whether the chosen specification is within limits.

Structural Lintel Requirements

Every bifold door opening needs a structural lintel spanning the full width above. The lintel carries the load of whatever is above the opening — wall, floor, roof — and transfers it to the structure on either side.

For openings up to approximately 3 metres, a standard steel or concrete lintel is usually appropriate. For wider openings, an engineered steel beam is typically required. The size of the beam depends on the span and the load above.

Your builder or structural engineer specifies the lintel. The lintel must be in place, settled, and structurally secure before your bifold doors are measured and manufactured.

What Affects Bifold Door Pricing?

Panel count: every additional panel adds cost — more aluminium, more glass, more hardware.

Glazing specification: triple glazing adds 15–25% over double glazing. Specialist glass (solar control, acoustic, self-cleaning) adds further.

System choice: the F80 IconiK and F82 Luminia command a premium over the BSF70 for their slimmer profiles and enhanced performance specifications.

Colour: standard single-colour powder coat finishes are included in most base prices. Dual colour adds 10–20%.

Hardware: security-grade hardware, specific handle styles, and premium ironmongery finishes all carry premiums.

Installation complexity: high-level work, removing existing doors, managing drainage or flooring at the threshold, and access constraints all affect fitting cost.

Price Ranges by Panel Count and Width

These are indicative supply-and-fit price ranges including VAT. Prices vary by specification and installer.

Prices for very wide systems (5 metres and above) vary significantly based on structural requirements and site conditions. A free survey is the only reliable way to establish an accurate price.

Supply Only vs Supply and Fit Pricing

Supply only covers the door system. Supply and fit covers the door, delivery, survey, removal of the existing installation, fitting, and sign-off.

For bifold doors, supply and fit from the company that manufactures your door is strongly recommended. The same team that measures the opening manufactures the door to those exact measurements. If the door doesn’t fit correctly, there is no ambiguity about who is responsible.

Bifold doors fitted by a third party not employed by the manufacturer create a gap in accountability. If the door performs poorly, the manufacturer points to the installer and the installer points to the manufacturer.

Triple Glazing Cost Premium

Triple glazing adds approximately 15–25% to the system cost. For a 4-panel system quoted at £5,500 with double glazing, triple glazing adds approximately £825–£1,375.

Whether the premium is worth it depends on the property and the use. For a well-insulated modern home in a standard UK location, double glazing achieves comfortable performance. For north-facing elevations, coastal locations, or buyers targeting maximum thermal performance, the triple glazing premium is justifiable.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

An accurate bifold door quote requires a physical survey of the opening. No reliable quotation can be given from dimensions supplied by the customer — the survey establishes the precise clear opening dimensions, confirms the structural condition, assesses threshold requirements, and identifies any complications.

Request a free survey before accepting any quotation. Any company that provides a firm price without surveying the opening is either guessing or planning to adjust the price after commitment.

Planning Permission for Aluminium Bifold Doors

Do Bifold Doors Need Planning Permission?

Most bifold door installations in existing homes do not require planning permission. Replacing an existing door or window opening with a bifold system is covered by Permitted Development rights in most circumstances.

Planning permission is likely required when:

  • The property is a listed building — Listed Building Consent is required
  • The installation is in a conservation area and the doors are visible from a public road
  • The opening is entirely new and the works that create it require planning permission
  • The property has Article 4 Directions that restrict Permitted Development rights

Permitted Development Rules for Bifold Doors

Permitted Development (PD) rights allow homeowners to make certain changes without applying for planning permission.

Installing bifold doors in an existing opening is almost always covered by PD rights — it is a material change that doesn’t alter the volume or footprint of the building.

Installing bifold doors in a new opening created as part of a rear extension typically follows the extension itself. A single-storey rear extension under 4 metres in depth (3 metres for semi-detached or terraced properties) usually falls within PD rights. If the extension is permitted, the bifold doors within it are generally permitted.

When uncertain, request a Pre-Application Enquiry from your local planning authority before spending money on surveys and quotations.

Conservation Areas

In a conservation area, changes to the exterior that are visible from a public road may require Conservation Area Consent.

Rear extensions not visible from the street are usually less restricted even in conservation areas. A rear bifold door installation on a non-visible elevation is typically permissible without consent.

Front or side elevation changes visible from public roads face more scrutiny. Standard modern aluminium bifold systems may be refused for visible elevations. Heritage aluminium systems with slim traditional profiles are more likely to be approved.

Listed Buildings

Any changes to a listed building — internal or external — require Listed Building Consent in addition to any planning permission.

Heritage aluminium systems with slim profiles, glazing bars, and period-appropriate finishes are increasingly approved for listed buildings where standard modern aluminium would be refused. Consult a conservation architect before applying.

Building Regulations for Bifold Doors

Building regulations are separate from planning permission. Where planning permission is not required, building regulations may still apply.

Replacement doors and windows in existing homes must comply with Part L (energy efficiency) — maximum U-value of 1.4 W/m²K for the whole door unit. A FENSA-registered installer certifies this automatically.

New-build properties and major building works also require compliance with Document Q (security) — accessible doors must pass PAS 24 testing.

Choosing Between Our Three Bifold Systems

BSF70 — Versatile Performance

The BSF70 is our versatile bifold system suited to a wide range of residential and commercial applications. Available with chamfered or square bead finish options, it accommodates glazing units from 28mm to 40mm thickness.
Technical specification:

  • Maximum sash height: 2,400mm
  • Maximum sash weight: 130kg
  • Glazing thickness: 28–40mm
  • U-value (double glazing): 1.6 W/m²K
  • Air tightness: Class 4 (600Pa)
  • Water tightness: Class 9A (600Pa)

The BSF70 achieves the highest air and water tightness ratings of all three systems — Class 4 and Class 9A. For exposed locations where weather resistance is the top priority, the BSF70 is a strong specification choice.
The 1.6 W/m²K U-value does not meet the current Part L replacement door requirement on its own. Confirm glazing specification when ordering to ensure the whole-door figure meets the 1.4 W/m²K requirement.
Best for: residential and commercial projects where maximum weather resistance and structural robustness are priorities, particularly exposed or coastal locations.

F80 IconiK — Slimline Aesthetics

The F80 IconiK is our slimline system. It achieves visible sightlines of 87mm using the slim sash option — among the narrowest available in aluminium bifold systems. This system maximises glass area and natural light.

  • Maximum sash height: 2,400mm
  • Maximum sash weight: 130kg
  • Glazing thickness: 23–46mm
  • U-value (double glazing): 1.3 W/m²K
