What are Aluminium Doors?

Aluminium doors are door systems where the frame, sash, and structural components are made from aluminium alloy profiles. The glass panels are separate components and the aluminium is the skeleton that holds everything together.

How Aluminium Door Frames are Engineered

Aluminium is manufactured into door frames through a process called extrusion. Molten aluminium alloy is pushed through a shaped die to produce a profile, a long section with a precise cross-section. This profile is then cut to length, machined at the joints, and assembled into frames.

Extrusion produces consistent results. Every frame section is identical to the last. There are no knots, grain variations, or natural inconsistencies. This precision is why aluminium allows much slimmer frames than timber or uPVC for the same structural performance.

The result is a frame that is strong, dimensionally stable, and manufactured to tighter tolerances than any organic material can achieve.

What Thermally Broken Aluminium Means

Raw aluminium conducts heat very efficiently. Touch an untreated aluminium frame in winter and it will feel cold because heat is passing directly through it. Early aluminium windows had this problem. The material performed structurally but was thermally poor. The solution is the thermal break.

A thermal break is a strip of polyamide which is a non-conductive plastic inserted between the inner and outer sections of the aluminium frame profile. The polyamide does not conduct heat the way aluminium does. It breaks the path of heat transfer through the frame.

All quality modern aluminium doors use thermally broken frames as standard. This is the technology that makes aluminium competitive on energy efficiency. If a door system doesn’t use a thermally broken frame, do not buy it.

How Aluminium Compares to Other Frame Materials

Three materials dominate the UK market: aluminium, uPVC, and timber.

Aluminium is the strongest. Its strength allows slimmer frames that support larger glass panels. Slimmer frames mean more natural light and better views. Aluminium doesn’t warp, rot, or discolour over time. It is the longest-lasting of the three materials.

uPVC is the most affordable. It performs well for standard-sized doors in normal conditions. It becomes structurally challenged at wide spans and in exposed locations. Colours are limited and cannot be changed once manufactured.
Timber is traditional and renewable. It has natural warmth that aluminium cannot fully replicate. It requires significantly more maintenance — repainting or restaining every few years — and is vulnerable to rot if water finds entry points.

Aluminium Bifold Doors

Aluminium bifold doors are multi-panel systems that fold and stack to one side, creating a wide, unobstructed opening between indoor and outdoor spaces.

They are the most specified glazing product for UK kitchen extensions and garden room projects. A 3-metre or 4-metre opening can be completely cleared — no frame in the way. The panels stack neatly to one side against the wall.
Bifold doors are available in configurations from 2 to 8 panels. Odd numbers of panels allow a traffic door — a single panel that opens independently for everyday access without moving the whole system.

Aluminium Sliding Doors

Aluminium sliding doors glide horizontally on a track. One or more panels slide behind a fixed panel. Unlike bifold doors, sliding panels remain within the frame aperture — you cannot achieve a completely clear opening.

Sliding doors suit very wide spans where bifold stacking space isn’t available. They’re popular in contemporary new-build properties where a minimal, clean aesthetic is the priority. They require less floor space to operate than bifold doors.

Why Choose Aluminium Over Other Materials?

Aluminium vs uPVC Doors

uPVC is cheaper upfront. For a standard-sized door in a typical UK home, uPVC is a practical, cost-effective choice.

Aluminium wins on several important counts.

  • Frame strength means slimmer sightlines. Aluminium frames are often 40–50% slimmer than equivalent uPVC frames carrying the same load. Slimmer frames mean more glass area and more natural light in the room.
  • Wide opening performance favours aluminium significantly. uPVC becomes structurally problematic at wide spans — the frames need reinforcing, which increases their visual bulk. A 4-metre aluminium bifold can use the same slim profiles as a 2-metre system. uPVC cannot.
  • Lifespan is longer with aluminium. Quality aluminium doors last 30–50 years under normal UK conditions. The International Aluminium Institute reports that aluminium building components can last up to 60 years in optimal conditions. Most uPVC products carry 10–20 year guarantees, and uPVC shows visible degradation — yellowing, surface crazing — after 15–20 years in sun-exposed positions.
  • Colour options are far greater with aluminium. Powder-coated aluminium is available in any RAL colour and can be changed if the property is redecorated. uPVC colours are fixed at manufacture.

Aluminium vs Composite Doors

Composite doors are specifically entrance doors — single front or back door formats. They are not available as bifold, sliding, or large-span systems.

A composite door combines a solid GRP skin, a foam-filled insulating core, and internal framing. They are excellent for single entrance door applications — warm to touch, very secure, and available in realistic timber-look finishes.

For a standard single front door, composite is a genuine competitor to aluminium. It’s often warmer to the touch, comparable on security, and available at lower price points.

For bifold, sliding, or any large-span application, composite isn’t relevant — it simply doesn’t exist in those formats.

Aluminium vs Timber Doors

Timber is the traditional material. It works well architecturally in period properties and has a natural warmth that aluminium cannot fully replicate.

The practical case against timber is maintenance. Timber doors need repainting or restaining every 3–5 years to maintain their protection. They can warp in prolonged wet weather. They’re vulnerable to rot if water finds entry points at joints and cills.

Aluminium requires far less maintenance. No painting, no swelling, no rot risk.

For conservation areas and listed buildings, timber is often the first material planning officers specify. However, quality heritage aluminium systems are increasingly accepted as like-for-like equivalents.

Cost comparisons depend on specification. Like-for-like comparisons on large-span systems often show aluminium comparable to or cheaper than quality engineered timber.

What Are the Disadvantages of Aluminium Doors?

Being honest about limitations helps you make a better decision.

Cost: Aluminium doors cost more than uPVC. For bifold systems, the premium over uPVC can be significant — the cost difference per panel adds up across a wide system.

Thermal conductivity without a thermal break: Raw aluminium conducts heat. A low-quality aluminium door without a properly engineered polyamide thermal break will be a poor thermal performer. Always confirm in writing that any system you buy uses a thermally broken frame.

Surface condensation: In very cold weather, condensation can form on the outer surface of aluminium frames. This is normal physics — warm moist air meeting a cold surface. It is not a fault and does not indicate thermal failure. It is different from condensation forming inside the sealed glass unit — that indicates glazing seal failure and needs addressing.

Repair complexity: A damaged aluminium frame profile is harder to repair than timber. Timber can be filled, shaped, and repainted. Damaged aluminium sections typically require section replacement.

Matching Aluminium Doors With Aluminium Windows

If you’re replacing windows and doors together, specifying aluminium for both delivers a coordinated result that mixed materials cannot achieve.

The same powder coat colour runs across both. Sightline widths can be matched so frames align visually. Thermal performance levels are consistent across the entire envelope.

Mixed material combinations — aluminium doors alongside uPVC windows — often look mismatched in colour tone and frame proportion, and this mismatch becomes more visible as the materials age at different rates.

Thermal Performance and Energy Efficiency

What Is a U-Value and Why Does It Matter?

A U-value measures how much heat passes through a material per second, per square metre, for every degree of temperature difference between inside and outside. It is measured in W/m²K — watts per square metre per Kelvin.

The lower the U-value, the better the insulation. A U-value of 1.0 W/m²K loses heat at half the rate of a U-value of 2.0 W/m²K.

UK Building Regulations under Part L of the Building Regulations currently requires replacement door systems to achieve a maximum whole-door U-value of 1.4 W/m²K. Quality aluminium bifold systems achieve between 1.0 and 1.6 W/m²K depending on the system and glazing specification chosen.

How Thermal Break Technology Works

The polyamide thermal break sits inside the frame profile. It creates a continuous barrier between the exterior aluminium section — which is exposed to outside temperatures — and the interior aluminium section, which is inside the warm building envelope.

Polyamide does not conduct heat the way aluminium does. Heat trying to escape from inside to outside through the frame hits the polyamide and is significantly slowed.

The width of the thermal break affects performance. A wider break generally reduces heat transfer more effectively. The full thermal performance of a door system is determined by the frame design, the glazing specification, and how well the installation seals the gap between frame and wall.

Building Regulations Part L — What Aluminium Must Achieve

Part L of the Building Regulations covers energy efficiency in buildings. When you replace doors or windows in an existing property, the new products must meet minimum thermal performance standards.

For replacement doors, the current requirement is a whole-door U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better. This includes both the frame and the glazed area combined.

New extensions and new-build properties typically require better performance than simple replacements — your installer will advise on the specific requirements for your project.

A FENSA-registered installer self-certifies compliance with Part L as part of the installation. This is documented and submitted automatically. The certificate you receive is required when selling your property.

Double Glazing vs Triple Glazing for Aluminium Doors

Double glazing is standard on all quality aluminium doors. Two panes of glass with an insulating gas — typically argon — sealed between them. The glass unit typically achieves around 1.0 W/m²K on its own.

Triple glazing adds a third pane. The glass unit U-value improves to around 0.5–0.6 W/m²K. The overall door U-value improves, but not proportionally — the frame also contributes to heat loss, so the whole-door improvement is smaller than the glass improvement alone.

Triple glazing adds cost — typically 15–25% — and adds weight to each panel. For most UK properties, double glazing with a quality thermally broken frame achieves comfortable performance. Triple glazing is most worthwhile in very exposed locations, north-facing orientations, or Passivhaus-level performance targets.

Aluminium Doors for Exposed and Coastal Locations

Salt air, sustained wind pressure, and driven rain present specific challenges. Aluminium handles them better than any organic material.

Powder-coated aluminium resists salt corrosion. Marine-grade powder coating is available for very exposed coastal positions. The dimensional stability of aluminium means it does not swell, shrink, or warp in response to moisture and temperature cycling.

Air tightness and water tightness ratings become critical in exposed locations. Air tightness is classified from Class 1 (lowest) to Class 4 (highest — 600Pa). Water tightness from Class 1A to Class 9A (highest — 600Pa). For exposed coastal sites, look for Class 4 air tightness and Class 9A water tightness.

Security Standards for Aluminium Doors

PAS 24 Explained

PAS 24 is the UK standard for enhanced security performance of door sets. It is the most widely referenced security certification for residential doors and the standard required by Document Q in new-build properties.

PAS 24 testing subjects a door system to controlled attack scenarios — physical attacks on the frame, the locks, the hinges, and the glazing. A door passing PAS 24 has demonstrated meaningful resistance to forced entry using commonly available tools under realistic attack conditions.

Ask any supplier to provide the actual PAS 24 test certificate for the specific system they are quoting. There is a meaningful difference between a tested and certified system and one a supplier describes as meeting the standard without documentary evidence.

Multi-Point Locking Systems

A single-point lock secures a door at one position. A multi-point locking system engages simultaneously at multiple positions up the height of the door leaf when the handle is operated or the key is turned.

This matters because a door secured at only one point can be levered open at the unsecured ends with relatively modest force. Multiple locking points distributed up the frame height require simultaneous force at all points — significantly increasing the difficulty of forced entry.

Quality aluminium bifold and entrance doors include multi-point locking as standard. Confirm the number of locking points and ask to see the hardware specification before purchasing.

Document Q Compliance

Approved Document Q is the security section of UK Building Regulations that applies to new-build homes, extensions to existing homes requiring Building Regulations approval, and buildings converted to residential use. It requires accessible doors in new-build properties to meet the requirements of Approved Document Q — which includes passing PAS 24 testing.

If your bifold doors form part of a new build or an extension that requires building regulations approval, your installer will need to demonstrate compliance with Document Q. What to Check When Comparing Security Claims

Security language in marketing is often vague. Ask for specifics before purchasing.

Request the PAS 24 certificate — not a statement that the system “complies with” or “meets the requirements of” PAS 24. A valid certificate names the specific system tested.

Confirm what locking hardware is included in the quoted price. Some quotations include basic hardware with security-grade hardware as an optional extra. Establish this before accepting a quote.

Aluminium Door Colours and Finishes

How Powder Coating Works

Powder coating is the finishing process applied to aluminium frames. It is fundamentally different from liquid paint.

The aluminium profile is chemically cleaned and pre-treated. A dry powder — made from pigment and resin — is electrostatically charged and applied to the surface. The charge causes the powder to cling uniformly to all surfaces, including recesses and edges. The coated profile is then cured in an oven at approximately 200°C for 10 to 15 minutes. The powder melts, flows together, and forms a hard, continuous coating.

The result is more durable than any paint finish. It resists chipping, scratching, and UV fading significantly better than liquid paint. Because the colour exists through the depth of the coating, minor surface scuffs don’t expose bare metal.

Standard RAL Colours for Aluminium Doors

RAL is the European colour matching system. When a manufacturer offers “any RAL colour,” they mean any of the 216 colours in the RAL Classic system.

The most popular RAL colours for UK aluminium doors:

  • RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey — the single most requested colour for contemporary homes
  • RAL 9005 Jet Black — bold, high contrast, suits modern architecture
  • RAL 9010 Pure White — clean and minimal, popular for interior-facing finishes

Dual Colour Options Explained

Dual colour means the exterior and interior faces of the door frame are finished in different colours. The outer face might be anthracite grey to match the house exterior, while the inner face is white to blend with the interior.

This is achieved by powder coating the inner and outer aluminium sections separately before assembly. The polyamide thermal break that separates the two sections keeps the colours cleanly divided.

Dual colour typically adds 10–20% to the cost of a single-colour finish. For many homeowners, it solves a genuine problem — the colour that looks right from outside doesn’t necessarily look right from inside.

How Long Does Powder Coating Last?

Quality powder coating on aluminium should maintain its appearance for 25–40 years under normal UK conditions. Coastal environments with salt spray and sustained UV exposure may see some degradation earlier.

Regular gentle cleaning with mild detergent and warm water preserves the finish. Avoid abrasive cleaners, wire wool, and solvent-based products. These remove the surface layer of the coating and accelerate subsequent degradation.

Handle Styles, Ironmongery, and Hardware Options

Hardware affects both appearance and daily usability.

Bifold door handles are typically lever handles — easy to grip when operating stacking panels. Entrance doors offer more variety: lever handles, pad handles, pull bars, and traditional t-bar pulls.

Hardware finishes include chrome, brushed stainless steel, satin, graphite, black, and bronze. The finish should coordinate with other metal elements in the space — kitchen hardware, taps, light fittings.

Quality hardware matters in daily use. Under-specified hardware — particularly rollers and locking mechanisms — wears faster and feels cheaper to operate. Confirm the hardware specification included in your quote and ask what premium security hardware options are available.

Planning Permission and Building Regulations

When Do Aluminium Doors Need Planning Permission?

Most aluminium door installations do not need planning permission. Replacing an existing door with a new one of similar appearance is a routine home improvement covered by Permitted Development rights in most circumstances.

Planning permission is likely needed when:

The property is a listed building — any alteration to a listed building’s exterior requires Listed Building Consent regardless of size or material.

The property is in a conservation area and the new doors are visible from a public road — conservation area rules restrict external changes visible from the street.

The installation involves creating a new opening as part of a larger project that itself requires planning permission.

The property has specific planning conditions restricting permitted development — check your title deeds or contact the local planning authority.

Permitted Development Rights for Doors

Permitted Development (PD) rights allow homeowners to make certain changes without planning permission. Replacing existing doors like-for-like — same position, similar appearance — is almost always covered by PD rights.

Installing doors in a completely new opening depends on whether the opening itself is being created as part of permitted or consented works. A single-storey rear extension under 4 metres in depth (3 metres for semi-detached and terraced) typically falls within PD rights. If the extension is permitted, the doors installed within it are generally permitted too.

PD rights can be removed by local planning authorities through Article 4 Directions. If you live in an area where street character is tightly controlled, check whether PD rights still apply to your property before proceeding.

Conservation Areas — Special Rules

Conservation areas are designated to protect the character of specific streets, villages, or neighbourhoods. Additional restrictions apply to changes visible from public roads.

In a conservation area, you may need Conservation Area Consent for door replacements visible from the street. Local planning officers will typically expect new doors to respect the character of the area — which often means modern wide-span bifold systems are refused for front elevations, while heritage aluminium with slim profiles is approved.

Rear extensions not visible from public roads are usually less restricted even in conservation areas. Always confirm with the local authority before committing to a specification.

Listed Buildings — What Approval Is Needed

Listed Building Consent is required for any alteration to the exterior or interior of a listed building — including door replacements. This applies regardless of whether planning permission is also needed.

Applications are assessed case by case. The key question is whether the proposed doors are appropriate for the character and historic significance of the building.

Heritage aluminium systems with slim profiles and traditional finishes are increasingly accepted for listed buildings where modern aluminium would be refused. Before applying, consult a specialist conservation architect. Getting the application right first time avoids costly delays.

Document Q and Part L Requirements Summary

Both documents apply to new-build homes and major building works requiring Building Regulations approval.

Part L requires replacement door systems to achieve a maximum whole-door U-value of 1.4 W/m²K. How Much Do Aluminium Doors Cost in the UK?

What Affects Aluminium Door Pricing?

Door type is the primary factor. Bifold doors cost more than single entrance doors — more panels, more hardware, more complexity. Every additional panel adds cost.

Glazing specification adds significantly to the total. Triple glazing typically adds 15–25% over double glazing. Specialist glass — acoustic, self-cleaning, solar control — adds further.

Colour affects cost. Standard single-colour finishes are included in most base prices. Dual colour adds 10–20%. Custom RAL colours outside the standard range may add a small premium.

Hardware can add substantially to a quote. Basic hardware is often the default. Security-grade locks, premium handle styles, and specific ironmongery finishes all carry premiums. Confirm what’s included before accepting a quote.

Supply Only vs Supply and Fit Pricing

Supply-only pricing covers the door system itself. You arrange separate installation.

Supply-and-fit covers the door, delivery, survey, removal of the old installation, fitting, and sign-off.

For aluminium doors, supply-and-fit from a single company is almost always better value and better practice. The same company handles measurement, manufacture, and installation. If the door doesn’t fit correctly, there is no ambiguity about whose responsibility it is.

Aluminium doors installed incorrectly — out of level, inadequately sealed, with incorrect threshold placement — perform poorly regardless of their quality. Professional survey and installation is not optional.

Why Aluminium Costs More Than uPVC — Is It Worth It?

Aluminium extrusion, powder coating, and hardware are more expensive to produce than uPVC. The premium is real.

For standard-sized doors in typical sheltered UK homes, uPVC is a reasonable choice and the premium may not be justified.

For wide openings, exposed locations, long-term property value, and where visual impact matters, aluminium’s advantages — slimmer frames, longer lifespan, greater colour flexibility, better performance at scale — clearly justify the cost difference over the lifetime of the installation.

Preparing Your Home for Bifold Door Installation

Creating the Aperture

If you’re creating a new opening for your doors — as part of an extension or renovation — the aperture needs to be structurally complete before your doors can be measured.

The masonry or structural opening should be finished to its final dimensions. Any rendering, plastering, or tiling on the surrounding reveals should be at a stage where the door frame can be positioned accurately.

Do not ask a door company to measure until the structural opening is in its final state. Measuring from a temporary or unfinished opening produces doors that won’t fit correctly once the work is complete.

Installing the Lintel

The lintel spans the opening above the doors and carries the structural load of whatever is above. For wide bifold door openings, the lintel is a critical structural element.

Your builder or structural engineer specifies the lintel size based on the opening width and the load it carries. Standard lintels are used for openings up to 2–3 metres. Engineered steel beams are typically required for wider bifold openings.

The lintel must be in place and fully settled before your door installation date. A freshly poured concrete padstone or freshly installed beam may still be deflecting slightly — this can cause alignment problems in the finished installation.

Installation Day — What to Expect

A typical bifold door installation takes one to two days. A single entrance door typically takes half a day to a full day.

What happens: the existing door and frame are removed; the opening is prepared, including any damp-proofing, sill preparation, and structural checks; the new frame is positioned, levelled, packed, and secured; panels are hung and adjusted; hardware is fitted; seals and thresholds are installed; and the complete installation is tested — every panel opened, closed, locked, and unlocked.

At the end, your installer should demonstrate operation, explain the maintenance requirements, and leave you with the FENSA certificate and any relevant product documents.

How Long Will Installation Take?

Single entrance door: half a day to a full day. 3–4 panel bifold system: one full day. 5–6 panel bifold system or complex installation: one to two days. Large sliding door systems: one to two days.

Lead times from survey to installation are typically 4–8 weeks, varying by manufacturer and season. Spring and summer are peak periods with longer lead times. Ordering in autumn or winter often means faster delivery.

Maintenance and Lifespan
