Lightweight yet structurally strong aluminium frames support large glazing units between 28mm and 40mm, delivering a balanced combination of strength and visual openness. Door leafs slide smoothly and fold neatly back to create wide, unobstructed openings.
The BSF70 system supports both open-in and open-out configurations, making it suitable for residential and mixed-use projects. The Complete Aluminium Doors Handbook
Everything you need to know before buying aluminium doors, such as their configurations, costs, thermal performance, security standards, planning permission, and maintenance, is covered in full detail.
Bifold Door Designs
Aluminium doors can be configured to open inwards or outwards, with multiple panel combinations available. This flexibility allows the system to suit compact openings, wide spans, and different day-to-day access needs. The design you choose affects how the doors stack, how the space is used, and how easily you can move between indoors and outdoors.

Even number of Bifolding Panels
Bifold doors with two, four, or six panels offer a balanced and symmetrical appearance. This configuration is ideal when you want the panels to fold evenly to one side or split to fold back at both ends.
Note: With six-panel setups, the middle panels can slide away smoothly, creating a wide and open feel that works well for larger extensions and garden openings.

Odd number of Bifolding Panels
An odd number of panels, such as three, five, or seven, allows one panel to act as a traffic door. This is a practical option for everyday use, as it provides easy access without needing to open the entire bifold system.
Note: Odd-panel configurations are popular in family homes and busy spaces where convenience and flexibility are important.
Enjoy Privacy without regular Maintenance with Integral Blinds
Integral blinds are permanently sealed within the double-glazed unit, offering a stylish, maintenance-free solution for light control and privacy. Unlike conventional blinds, they remain protected from dust, moisture, and everyday damage, keeping them looking clean for years. Ideal for busy family homes, integral blinds combine modern convenience with improved energy efficiency and a sleek, uncluttered appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do aluminium bifold doors cost in the UK?
Most projects cost between £1,400 and £7,500, averaging around £5,000 fully installed. Size, panel count, system and glazing set the final price.
When paired with double or triple glazing, these doors can achieve competitive U-values that support compliance with current UK Building Regulations, including Part L.
Proper installation and correct glazing selection are equally important to ensure long-term energy efficiency and comfort during colder months.
Can the doors be made to measure?
Yes. Every set is made to the sizes taken at survey. You also choose the system, panel layout, colour, glass, handles and threshold.
What sizes are available?
There is no single standard size. Sash heights reach 2400mm on BSF70 and F80 IconiK, and 2500mm on F82 Luminia. F80 IconiK panels can be up to 1200mm wide.
If views and daylight matter most, yes. F80 IconiK gives visible frames from 87mm. It also has our best U value, at 1.0 W/m²K with triple glazing.
Why Choose Aluminium?
Aluminium is strong for its weight. This lets a narrow frame carry large, heavy glass without bending. Our systems support sashes up to 150kg, which is hard to match in uPVC. You get more glass, less frame, and a brighter room.
Frame Strength and Stability
Aluminium does not absorb moisture, so it will not rot, swell, or warp. It holds its shape through hot summers and cold winters. That keeps the panels aligned and the locks working smoothly. Our aluminium vs uPVC comparison sets out the differences side by side.
Low Maintenance Ownership
Powder-coated frames never need painting. Wash them with mild soapy water a few times a year. Keep the tracks and drainage channels free of grit and leaves. A light clean of the rollers and hinges keeps the panels gliding smoothly.
Good to know: Thermal performance depends on the full specification. The frame, thermal break, glass and fitting all play a part. We give you the figures for the exact system we quote.
Our Three Bifold Door Systems
Each system suits a different balance of budget, sightline and performance. All three sit within our wider aluminium door range.
BSF70 and BSF70 HI
BSF70 is our most versatile system and suits a wide range of homes. You can choose a chamfered or square glazing bead to match your style. It takes glazing units from 24mm to 40mm and sashes up to 2400mm high. A flush pop-out handle lets the stacked panels sit close to the wall.
BSF70 opens in or out. Low threshold options support Part M access needs. It achieves U values of 1.6 W/m²K, or 1.4 W/m²K in the HI version. It also reaches Class 4 air tightness and Class 9A water tightness.
F80 IconiK Slimline
F80 IconiK is our choice for maximum glass. Visible frame widths can be as narrow as 87mm with the slim sash. It supports panels up to 2400mm high and 1200mm wide. A clip-in glazing bead and a full range of sub-sills make fitting simpler.
IconiK opens in or out and meets Part L energy rules. It achieves 1.3 W/m²K with double glazing and 1.0 W/m²K with triple glazing. That makes it our best option for energy-conscious homes.
F82 Luminia
F82 Luminia is built for demanding projects and larger panels. It carries the tallest and heaviest sashes in our range, up to 2500mm high and 150kg. It achieves a U-value of 1.3 W/m²K and holds PAS 24 security certification.
Luminia also delivers Class 4 air tightness and Class 9A water tightness. That makes it a strong choice for exposed sites and commercial settings. Minimal framing keeps the look clean despite its strength.

Slimline Frames and Design Options
Slimline aluminium bifold doors put more glass and less frame between you and the garden. Our F80 IconiK system gives visible frame widths from just 87mm. That means wider views and more daylight across the room.
Understanding Frame Sightlines
A sightline is the visible width of the frame between two panes of glass. “Slimline” is a label, not a measurement. Always ask which part of the profile a supplier has measured. Our slimline guide explains how to compare them fairly.
Colour Options
Every frame is powder-coated for a tough, colour-stable finish that resists fading. Choose from our popular finishes or any RAL colour to match your home.

- Black
- Anthracite Grey
- Black on White (dual colour)
- Anthracite Grey on White (dual colour)
- Any RAL colour
Dual colour frames let you match the inside to your room and the outside to your brickwork. For styling inspiration, browse our design ideas guide.
Handle Options
Handles affect both the look and the feel of your doors. Our long lever handles come in six finishes:
- White
- Satin
- Chrome
- Graphite
- Bronze
- Antique Black
Integral Blinds
Integral blinds sit sealed inside the double-glazed unit. They never gather dust and never need cleaning. Adjustable slats let you control glare and privacy with ease. They suit kitchens, living rooms and home offices, with no cords or hanging blinds.
Sizes and Panel Configurations
Every set is built to your opening, not picked from a fixed catalogue. Our bespoke aluminium bifold doors are made to the exact sizes taken at survey. Sash heights reach up to 2500mm, depending on the system. Our bifold door sizes guide shows typical widths for each panel count.
Even Number of Panels
Sets with two, four or six panels give a balanced, symmetrical look. The panels can fold to one side or split to fold back at both ends. On six-panel sets, splitting the panels creates a wide, open centre for larger extensions.
Odd Number of Panels
Sets with three, five or seven panels let one panel work as a traffic door. You can step outside without folding the whole set. This is the most practical layout for busy family homes. Our configuration guide shows worked examples.
| Panels | Typical use | Traffic door |
|---|---|---|
| 2 panels | Narrow openings and replacement doorways | No |
| 3 panels | Kitchens and small extensions | Yes |
| 4 panels | Medium openings | With a split layout |
| 5 panels | Wider rear extensions | Yes |
| 6 panels | Large openings that split both ways | With a split layout |
| 7 panels or more | Very wide rear walls | Yes, on odd counts |
Inward Opening and Outward Opening
All three systems open in or out. Outward opening doors stack on the patio and keep your room clear. Inward opening doors stack inside, which suits a narrow balcony or small patio. Think about where your furniture sits before you choose.
Measuring the Opening
Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom. Do the same for the height on both sides and in the middle. Use the smallest figure as your guide. Our step-by-step measuring guide walks you through it.
Good to know: Your own measurements help with a first price. Our surveyor still checks the opening before anything is made. This protects you from a costly sizing mistake.
Glazing, Energy Efficiency and Security
Glass, seals and locks decide how warm, dry and secure your home feels. Here is how our systems perform and what to compare.
Double Glazing, Triple Glazing and U Values
A U value shows how much heat passes through a door, and lower is better. Polyamide thermal breaks, multi-chamber profiles and warm edge spacer bars all cut heat loss. F80 IconiK reaches 1.0 W/m²K with triple glazing. Always compare the whole door figure, not the glass alone.
Large glass in cold weather can sometimes cause condensation. Good ventilation and the right glazing usually solve it. Our guide on stopping condensation explains the simple fixes.
Locking and Security
Every set uses multipoint locking along the panel height. Shoot bolts and anti lift protection add further strength. F82 Luminia holds PAS 24 certification, the UK standard for resistance to forced entry. Toughened or laminated safety glass can also be specified.
Weather Sealing and Thresholds
Engineered seals guard against wind, rain and draughts. BSF70 and F82 Luminia reach Class 9A water tightness, tested at 600Pa. Low threshold options give a smoother step to the patio and support Part M access. Our low threshold guide covers drainage and floor levels.
How Much Do They Cost?
In the UK, cost between £1,400 and £7,500. Fully installed projects average around £5,000. Fitted prices typically run from £3,000 to £7,500. Your final price depends on size, panel count, system, and installation.
What Affects the Price?
- Overall width and height of the opening
- Number of panels and folding layout
- System choice: BSF70, F80 IconiK or F82 Luminia
- Double or triple glazing and any safety glass
- Colour, including RAL and dual colour finishes
- Handle finish, integral blinds and threshold type
- Removal and disposal of your old doors
- Structural work, such as a new lintel or steel beam
Supply Only or Fully Fitted?
Supply only means we make and deliver your doors while you arrange your own fitter. It suits builders, trade buyers and self-builders. Our supply-only cost guide breaks down prices by panel count.
A fully fitted service means our certified team handles the survey, fitting and final checks. The work is FENSA certified and covered by our 10-year guarantee. Our installation cost guide explains labour in detail.
| Cost item | Supply only | Fully fitted |
|---|---|---|
| Doors, glass and hardware | Included | Included |
| Survey and measuring | Ask your supplier | Included |
| Installation labour | Not included | Included |
| FENSA certification | Your fitter arranges it | Included |
| Removal of old doors | Not included | Confirm in quote |
| Structural work and making good | Not included | Confirm in quote |
Good to know: Always check whether a quote includes VAT, delivery and disposal. These are the most common reasons two quotes do not match.
Our Supply and Fit Service
Our aluminium bifold doors supply and fit service covers everything from the first visit to aftercare. One team surveys, orders, installs and checks your doors. Every set is manufactured in the UK. Our installers are FENSA registered, so the work is certified for Building Regulations.
Our Three Step Process
1. Free Consultation and Expert Survey. We visit your home to take accurate measurements and check the lintel, floor levels, and access. We give honest advice on the right system for your space and budget. There is no obligation to go ahead.
2. Made-to-Measure Manufacturing. Once you approve the quote, your doors are built to exact sizes. We use quality materials and components. Every set is made to meet UK quality and safety standards.
3. Professional Installation and Aftercare. Our experienced team fits your doors with care and minimal disruption. We seal, adjust, and test every panel and lock before we leave. Ongoing aftercare and your 10-year guarantee follow.
How Long Does Installation Take?
Most standard replacements take one working day on site. Wider openings or structural work can add time. Our installation timeline guide covers each stage.
Before fitting day, confirm:
- The area near the opening is clear
- There is parking and access for large panels
- Who handles plastering and decorating
- Any structural work is complete and signed off
Will Bifold Doors Suit Your Property?
Folding doors suit most homes with a wide rear opening. They work naturally in modern extensions and new builds. The key is matching the system, panel count, and threshold to your opening and the way you live.
Extensions, Renovations and Replacement Openings
In a new extension, your builder forms the opening to suit the doors. In a replacement, we work with the opening you already have. Widening an opening may need a new lintel or steel beam. A builder or structural engineer should check this before you order.
Period and Conservation Properties
Our main range suits contemporary homes. For period properties or conservation areas, our heritage door range keeps the folding format with traditional profile detailing. It helps meet both planning and design needs.
Planning and Building Regulations
Most replacement doors on a house do not need planning permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent, so check with your local council first. Replacement doors must still meet Building Regulations, including Part L. Because we are FENSA registered, we certify our installations for you.
Smaller Openings and Alternatives
Bifolds are not right for every opening. If you prefer panels that slide rather than fold, our sliding door range covers the same openings. For narrow openings on a tighter budget, our uPVC French doors can be a better fit.
How to Choose the Right Supplier
A good aluminium bifold doors supplier gives you clear facts, not just nice photos. Look for published specifications, honest prices and a written guarantee. Ask who will survey and who will fit. Our guide to reputable manufacturers shows what to check.
